Festive parkrun

Festive parkrun

Regular readers will know that I am fairly new to parkrun - although my wife Nikki has been a regular park runner for years. It all started for me in the summer - I had talked myself into the Great South Run and knew I needed to make sure I got out more - parkrun was the sort of commitment I was looking for.

My first parkrun was in Naas (near Dublin, Ireland) in August - Nikki and I were there for the weekend and it seemed like as good a place as any to get started! We turned up there early - Irish parkrun starts later - and the atmosphere was great! We were treated like royalty!! Naas parkrun is a lovely parkrun - it’s smallish (there were 54 runners when Nikki and I did it) but we would recommend… Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I was hooked…

Since then, I have run another 18 and volunteered once. My home parkrun is Fareham, which is a lovely course - out and back along the bank of the creek, but as Nikki is something of a parkrun uber tourist we tend to travel a bit… I’ve done Eastleigh, Southsea, Portsmouth Lakeside, Brockwell Park Herne Hill, Netley Abbey and most recently Queen Elizabeth Country Park.

Which brings me on to the festive element. This year was a bumper year for park runners - the ONLY time that parkrun is allowed on any other day than a Saturday is Christmas Day and New Years Day - AND the only time you can run at anything other than 9am is New Years Day… So, New Years Day is the ONLY day it is possible to “double up!”

We kicked off the festive period with Christmas Eve at Portsmouth Lakeside parkrun (nice and flat - mainly pathed) - it was cold that morning, but a great turnout. Then we went for Christmas Day - I decided that I would take a load of gloves and hand them out to all the Volunteers (who are always magnificent and ANY parkrun) plus any youngsters who turned up (there were quite a few which surprised me!!) Nikki and I met a friend, Ros, and ran in duly festive hats!! 2 parkruns / 2 days!!

Next up, after a fantastic Christmas and a few runs in between, we got to another bumper parkrun weekend! We started off in Southsea on New Years Eve. Southsea is one of my favourite parkruns - it's always busy, and it's flat - New Years Eve was even busier than usual, but the atmosphere was great! Afterward it was onto the festivities of New Years Eve and an alarm call for New Years Day (much to the amusement of non runners!!). Our plan was to do Fareham at 9am as it is the closest and then onto Queen Elizabeth Country Park. We met with some friends who did both with us (Dean and Debbie) and Ros also made the QECP parkrun. All I have to say about this is that if there is a WORSE course as the second in a day I'd be surprised! QE is HILLY and MUDDY (very muddy!!) so it was a real challenge - but a lot of fun!!

So there you have it - 5 parkruns done in 8 days!

I really can't recommend parkrun enough to anyone who's yet to experience it - there is no pressure, all standards are catered for, and it is free forever! Find your local one here www.parkrun.com

Best Running Gloves !?!?

Ours have won awards...

The title shouldn't be read as a boast (although we like to think so!!), this is more about helping you chose the best glove for a runner - or indeed one for yourself!! ;-)

First things first, choosing a running glove is largely down to personal choice - are you a cold handed person, or actually do you find your hands warm up quickly? You'd be surprised how often I am told "I don't want anything too warm, I hate it when my hands get too warm!"

So let's get the basics out of the way! All of the options I am about to discuss will do the following by default:

  • Wick away moisture - helps keep hands warm as moisture (sweat!) is removed from the inside of the glove to the outside!
  • Keeps your hands warm - to a greater or lesser degree - more of that in a mo.
  • Have a modesty strip and eGlove runner Nikki calls it - snot/sweat wipe area to you and me!
  • Fully machine washable!
  • Silicon grips on the palm of hand and fingers - mainly so you don't drop several hundred quids worth of Smartphone!!
  • Touchscreen compatible fabric on both thumbs and forefingers to allow you to use your device or app of choice in warm, gloved, cosiness!
  • Available in Black / Black - Pink - Black / Green

With that in mind, what are the options?

eGlove Sport is our best selling and multi award winning running glove. It's a thin glove ideal for most people in most conditions. I run in these in temperatures down to -4 or -5 or so, but equally, they help regulate hand temperature, so are great at +10 too! It's a very comfortable glove, quite silky in feel and just does the job brilliantly! Thousands of customers and several awards can't be wrong!!

Alternatively, for those who suffer with cold hands, run in extreme weather or for ultra distances, perhaps the XTREME is a better option? It's thicker, tighter, with a longer double cuff and has the additional feature of Windstopper fabric which helps keep both the moisture and wind out, without compromising the breathability! These have been used in many XTREME Ultra Runs - most recently Shaun Marsden (aka @spontaneousplan) used them thoughout the 230km Arctic Ice Ultra! So, we say that they are like the Sport Run Glove - just more HARDCORE!!!!

Best of all, like all eGloves if you order something that isn't right - no problem, send it back and we will sort you out an exchange or a refund. Check out the glove guide for more info - here.

Our Mission

As you have probably worked out, eGlove is a small company. When Neil and I started off, we had no knowledge of running a sportswear company, or how to source products. We didn’t know about Marketing in this area, we had no contacts, no manufacturer and no product. What drove us was simple – it was about a need. This was in 2009/10.

Neil’s need was for a glove that he could use with his iPhone (3GS for all the geeks) while he was skiing – without having to take it off! We often use the phrase “no more dropped gloves on the chairlift”, this is through bitter experience!! My need was for a glove I could use while running, so I could use my iPhone (3GS too, then a 4) Nike+ App with my gloves on when the weather was cold. There is nothing worse than having to take your gloves off to pause the app or restart it – and your nose isn’t really a viable long term solution!

With this in mind, we went about setting a list of features we would want, and the type of glove we wanted to manufacture. We wanted the glove to be a decent quality, something we would be happy to buy and wear ourselves - we were consumers, and the end result had to meet our standards, it had to have the sort of features we would use. The snot & sweat strip on the eGlove Sport Running Glove is there because running in winter causes your nose to run, and you still sweat!! The silicone grips are there because I was paranoid about dropping my pride and joy! For Neil, the ski and snowboard eGlove was all about warmth and robustness. We made the palm on the original ski glove strong and robust so it wouldn’t get torn too easily by skis, and we designed the openings so that smartphones could be used without removing the gloves – dropped gloves and freezing hands avoided!!

The result of this was the original eGlove F3 and the Ski F3S:

Over the years we have taken the same approach to all of our gloves – make the best gloves we can afford with the most functionality. We want our wearers to LOVE them.

That’s our mission – for our customers to LOVE their eGloves.

The awards are great – we’ve won a few – the good reviews are lovely too… BUT, nothing beats a customer who has used their own hard earned cash going onto twitter or Facebook and saying “I love my eGloves!”

So, please share your eGlove LOVE! We'd love to see you out and about using your eGloves - the more extreme the better, providing its safe of course!

Have a great day!

James
